What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is where you turn your crazy ideas into real projects! At RoyalHacks, for 24 hours, you'll be learning and building in a energetic environment with people that are as passionate as you are! We provide incredible mentors, fun knowledge breaks, social activities, and more. Basically, you take care of hacking and we'll take care of you.

Who can come?

University students and any student enrolled in a higher educational program – that includes professional bachelors (Danish: "professionsbacheloruddannelser") and similar. International students are encouraged to join! Recent graduates (within 18 months) are also eligible. Not sure if that's you? Just reach out – chances are you're eligible!!

RoyalHacks is free for all admitted hackers!! It's our pleasure to bring the full hacker experience without any cost on your end. We're working hard to secure snacks and beverages through our sponsors and will confirm what's included closer to the event. We're committed to making RoyalHacks accessible!

What if I don't know how to code?

RoyalHacks is the perfect place to learn! This event is specifically designed for coders and non-coders alike. Projects win through qualities such as originality and usefulness, not just technical depth. We provide free access to Lovable for all hackers. Lovable is a popular vibe coding tool – a beginner-friendly AI tool for coding – that lets you build and deploy real web applications just by prompting. We also run a program of knowledge breaks – think of them as short and fun learning sessions – to teach you practical skills and tips you can apply directly in your project, no matter your experience level. Between Lovable, our knowledge breaks, and incredible mentors who are available throughout the event, we’ve made sure everyone can contribute – regardless of experience. Whether you're a designer, a business-IT student, a cybersecurity student, or anything else – you belong at RoyalHacks!

What is Lovable?

Lovable is a vibe-coding tool – an AI-powered app builder for non-coders. It lets anyone build a real, working web app just by describing it to Lovable's AI. Tell it "build me a tool where students submit project ideas and vote on them" and within minutes you have a live app with a database and user interface. No coding experience required. Every RoyalHacks participant gets free Lovable credits. Lovable lowers the barrier so anyone can get a working prototype up fast, even if they have never coded before!

What can I build?

Anything your heart desires!! Web apps, mobile apps, tools, dashboards, games — you name it, we'll support it. We have several challenge tracks with their own briefs, resources, and prizes to help spark ideas. Tracks are announced at kickoff on Saturday morning. More on those soon!

What if I don't have a team or an idea?

No worries – most people don’t, and that’s completely normal! Many hackers find their team through our pre-event Discord server or at our team-forming activities on event-day. As for ideas, our challenge tracks give you direction and we have activities at the start to help you find one. All you have to do is show up!

What is a track?

Accepted Answer

A track is a challenge category with its own brief, judging criteria, and prizes. Think of it as a lens — it shapes what kind of impact your project aims for. You choose your track(s) when you submit your project before the deadline on Sunday at noon.

Can I compete in multiple tracks?

Yes! As long as your project meets the criteria for each track and is submitted on time, you can enter as many as you like with the same project.

What is a knowledge break?

Accepted Answer

A knowledge break is a short 30-minute session where an industry expert shows you something useful you can apply to your project right away! No laptops required, no pressure — just sit down, get inspired, and leave with inspiration and knowledge you can use for the rest of the weekend and in your career! We run knowledge breaks throughout the event on topics like Figma-to-code, n8n, Lovable, and more.

Is the event in English?

Yes! All event communication, knowledge breaks, and talks are in English. But you’re free to use any language you like within your team.

Can I sleep at the venue?

Accepted Answer

Overnight sleeping isn't permitted at ITU for fire safety reasons. That said, the venue is open and staffed all night so you’re welcome to stay and work throughout the night!

What facilities are NOT provided?

We don't provide computers or monitors. Bring your own laptop and charger. Bring a water bottle and coffee cup if you can! If you're planning to stay through the night, bring headphones and whatever keeps you comfortable – we recommend a hoodie or a sweater.

What happens to my project?

It's yours. Submissions stay on Devpost and you're free to keep building, share it, or add it to your portfolio. RoyalHacks claims no ownership over what you make.
